Special: A Conversation With Investment Banker Gene McBurney

August 26, 2022

We have a special guest on this episode of Make Money Count! Gene McBurney, co-founder of GMP Capital Inc, has been good friends with Marcus for 20 years now. In this special episode, Marcus and Gene discuss important topics such as Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine; energy policy around the world; and how those macroeconomic topics impact the entire financial services industry.

Who is Gene McBurney?

Before Gene became an banker, he spent time as a securities lawyer. In 1995 he partnered up with head of investment banking at Gordon Capital, Brad Griffiths, to start a new financial firm. They took on additional partners Kevin Sullivan to run the sales side, and long before his time on Dragon’s Den, Michael Wekerle to run the business’s trading operations.

Originally called Griffiths McBurney & Partners, the company would change its name to GMP Capital INC and go on to become one of the biggest block traders on Bay Street. GMP worked on some huge deals, such as co-leading the IPO for Research in Motion in 1997. GMP is widely regarded as a powerhouse in equity trading and investment banking for over 20 years. At times valued in the billions of dollars, with revenues of hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

This is an intimate and casual conversation where the two men share their love for wine, good conversation, and each other’s company.
